From Middle English fleume, through Old French and Latin phlegma, from Ancient Greek phlegma ("inflammation; bodily humor"), related to phlegein ("to burn"). The classical humor was later identified with mucus; the figurative sense developed from the supposedly calm, sluggish temperament it produced.
