Simplified etymology

Cadge appeared in Middle English as a variant of catch, with a sense like “fasten.” The related noun cadger meant a travelling pedlar or dealer in northern English and Scots from the late 15th century; this produced verb senses such as “carry about” and “hawk or peddle,” from which the modern sense “ask for something to which one is not strictly entitled” developed.

From Middle English caggen (“to tie, fasten, bind”), probably from Old Norse. Compare Old Norse kǫgurr (“quilt”), kǫgurbarn (“swaddled child”).
