From Latin aestivare, 'to spend the summer,' based on aestivus, 'of summer,' and aestas, 'summer.' Estivate is the usual US spelling; aestivate is common in British English. Zoology specialized the verb for summer or dry-season dormancy, the warm-weather counterpart of hibernation.
