Cardiac was taken into English in the late Middle English period from Greek kardia, “heart.” Kardia and English heart descend from a much older shared root that predates the division of their ancestral languages into separate families.

From French cardiaque and Latin cardiacus, from Ancient Greek kardiakos ("relating to the heart"), based on kardia ("heart").
