   The steaming tureen was carried carefully to the center of the table.

From earlier English terrene, borrowed from French terrine, 'earthenware vessel,' from terre, 'earth,' ultimately Latin terra. Tureen and terrine are therefore doublets, although tureen developed the specific sense of a large covered serving dish.
