Etymology
From Medieval Latin distemperare ('to mix badly, disturb the balance of humors'), from dis- ('un-') + temperare ('to mingle in proper proportion, regulate'). The animal-disease and house-paint senses both descend from the notion of disordered or mixed proportions.
